The Advice and Resettlement Project at Feltham Young Offender Institution and Remand Centre in England is the first of its kind to be based inside a prison establishment.
Abstract
Firmly bedded in the daily life of the prison, the project provides direct resettlement and advice services to young prisoners, starting from their first night in Feltham and helping them prepare for release during the rest of their imprisonment. Project objectives focus on preparing resettlement plans, supporting probation service recommendations, complementing the sentence planning process by providing relevant advice and information, conducting resettlement workshops, and helping prison staff identify and make the best use of community resources. An evaluation of the project's first 18 months demonstrates how its unique and innovative approach has helped many young men cope with life in prison and has given them the best chance of leading law-abiding lives after release. Project operations are detailed with respect to prison staff links, referrals, bail requests, and outside links. Recommendations to improve the project are offered that concern raising awareness, working with remand prisoners, improving induction procedures, training, sentence planning, and equality and fairness.
