While police management reforms have clearly had a longer history than the Management Improvement Initiative, an initiative designed to ensure government departments adopt particular economic management practices, and the Police Board, these two mechanisms have added significant impetus to the police reform process. In general, they represent the ethos of "new managerialism" whereby the focus is on viewing government activities as productive processes that should be managed in a results-oriented and cost-effective way. Public awareness of police reforms in Victoria is limited, and the Police Board is engaging in public surveys to obtain community views on police and policing. The Police Board, however, does not appear to be actively promoting public education or engaging in open debate about police reforms. 41 references and 5 notes
