The Counterfeit Currency Analysis Project entails a strategic analysis of counterfeit activity associated with $10 banknotes. The database of the Central Bureau for Counterfeits at the RCMP Central Forensic Laboratory has been reconfigured to include new fields such as the date of passing and suspect and vehicle details. Strategic and tactical analysis will take place after a significant database of criminal intelligence has been created. Information on hot spots of counterfeiting activity will be shared with the law enforcement community. The Currency Education Program aims to inform cash handlers, their supervisors, and the general public about their currency and how to determine whether a banknote is genuine or counterfeit. The Bank of Canada has developed a poster and pamphlet to help front-end employees identify genuine notes quickly and discreetly without the use of special equipment and how to proceed when a suspected counterfeit note is received. The program's second phase is planned for spring 1998 and will focus on raising public awareness and pride in genuine banknotes. Illustrations
