Several crime prevention initiatives are described that focus on an inmate work programs in Georgia and Louisiana, the accreditation of a holding center in New York, and the National Night Out program.
Abstract
In Douglas County, Georgia, inmate services are used in litter removal and beautification and inmates were also involved in emergency relief for local residents following Hurricane Opal. The inmate work program in St. Martin, Louisiana, used inmates to restore a bridge that had been in place during the Civil War. The Erie County, New York, Holding Center has been accredited by the County Correctional Accreditation Program and is only one of nine accredited county correctional facilities in New York. The National Night Out program is a community building campaign designed to heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, generate support for and participation in local anticrime efforts, strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community relations, and send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. 4 photographs
