Since Abbott Northwestern Hospital is located in one of the poorest and crime-ridden sections of Minneapolis, the hospital has adopted a two-pronged approach to security that involves tight internal security and strong external liaisons with businesses, law enforcement, and community groups.
Abstract
The hospital is part of a 113-acre campus that is intertwined with the surrounding urban neighborhood. The hospital's safety and security department is responsible for the entire complex. Protective measures in place include an investigative unit and a team of security officers supported by electronic security (surveillance cameras, access control system, and security communication center). The implementation of these measures is detailed and their effectiveness in preventing crime is assessed. Hospital participation in a statewide public-private partnership known as Minnesota for Hope, Education, and Law and Safety is discussed. 1 photograph
