This report summarizes national and international efforts related to gun control, with emphasis on the efforts of institutes in the United Nations Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Program network.
Abstract
A project team met three times in 1995 and 1996 and decided to focus on issues involving citizen gun ownership. It gathered information from individual countries and developed a database on gun control to assist countries in developing common approaches to gun control, including strategies for addressing illicit trafficking in firearms. The work plan for the implementation of the project on the regulation of firearms emphasizes the goal of collecting, analyzing, and disseminating information and cooperating with intergovernmental and nongovernmental organizations active in this area. An expert group met in 1997 to focus on the firearms regulation study that will be published at the end of 1997. Proposals for consideration by the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice and appended expert group conclusions and summary of the international study on firearms regulation
