Firearms and incidents involving homicide, robbery, and suicide in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada were studied, using data from the Winnipeg Police Service's firearm incident files and property room files for robbery and suicide incidents that occurred in 1995 and for homicide incidents that occurred during 1990-95.
Abstract
The Winnipeg police responded to 1,692 identified gun-related incidents in 1995. A review of 462 incident files confirmed that 387 incidents involved guns: 325 incidents were criminal, and 64 were noncriminal. Nonrestricted rifles and shotguns were the most prevalent type of firearm encountered by police. Thirteen percent of the homicides in 1995 were committed with firearms, compared to 30 percent nationally. Seventeen percent of the robbery incidents in 1995 involved firearms, compared to 22 percent nationally. Ninety-four of the 137 apprehended suspects for whom criminal record information was available had criminal records. Information was missing or insufficient in many of the records.
