This article describes the program at the Bavarian Prison Staff Training School, Germany.
Abstract
The basic training for prison officers lasts about 20 months. It begins with general information about prisons, the prison system and its organization, and some basic duties and rights of a prison officer. Several phases cover practical and theoretical training. Students must demonstrate their practical knowledge and skills as they take over some tasks with restricted responsibilities. Students are also required to pass a written exam in six subjects in order to continue in the program. At the end of their 2 years of training, students must pass an oral exam; only after they pass the exam can they become prison officers. The school also provides a broad variety of continued training for all services in the Bavarian Prison System. Initial and continued training not only helps prison officers enhance their practical skills, but also to develop a positive attitude toward others, thereby improving safety and security and helping staff to experience their work as more fulfilling and satisfying.
