The book explains legal liabilities and constitutional rights associated with searches and seizures (Fourth Amendment), use of force, punishment (Eighth Amendment), AIDS, suicide, access to the courts, religion, mail and visiting and other First Amendment matters. It contains a short history of the courts and corrections and changing levels of court involvement with the operation of correctional institutions. It discusses litigation filed by inmates, almost all of which falls into one of three categories: civil rights, habeas corpus or tort actions. Separate chapters provide information on balancing inmate rights and institutional interests; due process and equal protection (Fourteenth Amendment); the correctional employee and litigation; officers' rights; and the Americans With Disabilities Act.
