The discussion notes that analytical techniques are used mainly for tactical support, strategy development, and prosecutorial support. Common types of analysis include association or network analysis, telephone record analysis, event flow and activity flow analysis, commodity flow analysis, visual investigative analysis, financial analysis, threat analysis, vulnerability analysis, crime pattern analysis, and time series analysis. Analysis should be central to agency planning and budget. Crime analysts receive training on statistical methods as well as on crime pattern analysis, time series analysis, and predicting crime.
