Introductions to the two volumes examine the purposes of punishment and emphasizes the goal of giving individual instructors maximum flexibility in deciding what topics to cover. The first chapter focuses on the criminal act, including the requirement of previously defined conduct, conduct in the definition of the offense, and the requirement of a voluntary act. The next two chapters discuss the criminal mind, including the foundations of mens rea and the application of the mens rea structure, and the meaning of attempt, including the required conduct, mens rea, impossibility, and abandonment in attempt and other offenses. Further chapters focus on sex offenses, justification and excuse, criminal responsibility, liability for the conduct of another, homicide, proof and proportionality.
