Abstract
General statistical comparisons address population, size, and police costs; crime, arrest, and traffic rates per 1,000 population; and Part I crimes and attempts reported to the FBI. A total of 235,288 Part I crimes and attempts were recorded in 1996 compared to 266,204 in 1995, an 11.6-percent decrease. Data on Part I offenses cover homicides, forcible rapes (and attempts), aggravated assaults, robberies (and attempts), larcenies (and attempts), vehicle thefts and recoveries, and worthless documents. Arson is covered in Part II offenses. Data also address law enforcement officers killed or assaulted. Adult arrests are presented by location and type of offense; by month and type of offense; and by age, sex, and type of offense. Arrest data are presented by bureau. Similar data are provided for juvenile arrests. Data on traffic accidents and enforcement cover numbers by month and location, injury by month and location, fatal injuries by month and location, and property damage by month and location. Data are broken down by bureau. Data on sworn personnel are presented by age, years of service, years in present rank, and location of assignment. Other personnel data address leave, work, overtime, and compensation. Training Division curricula and automotive equipment are presented as well. Extensive tabular and graphic data
