Abstract
The handbook attempts to define drug abuse prevention in ways that are useful for developing prevention initiatives; give an overview of concepts and models in drug abuse prevention; provide empirically based information to demonstrate that drug abuse prevention works; offer a framework for thinking about and organizing prevention initiatives at the community level; provide working examples of effective prevention programs for practitioners who may be considering one or more of the prevention models described in this document; and motivate readers to consider initiating or participating in prevention efforts. The document summarizes the drug problem in the United States, discusses supply reduction and demand reduction and reviews relevant literature on research-based theory for prevention programming, including a summary of findings on risk and protective factors associated with substance abuse.
