Abstract
A national poll of young people asked their views about crime and violence, safety, conflict, authority figures, factors contributing to violence, parents, values and the future. This same poll queried the young people about teens as part of the solution to crime and violence. Eighty-six percent of the young people claimed they were willing to participate in anti-crime and anti-violence efforts. This video observes a discussion group involving representatives from successful youth involvement programs in six different cities. The programs differ in the specifics of their activities, but all emphasize the importance of getting youth involved in school and community activities, having them contribute to solving problems, and letting them know they are valuable members of their communities. In addition, some programs worked to help young people avoid getting into trouble instead of reacting after they got into trouble. Business, community and law enforcement involvement was emphasized, from monetary contributions to teaching to serving as role models. Many of the programs put special emphasis on the concept of kids helping kids. Youth As Resources, featured on a network news program, was one of the most successful programs, demonstrating that "when kids feel connected to their community, remarkable things happen." The video includes addresses and telephone numbers of organizations to contact for further information, or for a copy of this video.
