Annotation
This collection of articles, handouts, and resources focuses on the relationship between domestic assault and chemical dependency and interventions with perpetrators and survivors of domestic violence; the materials were compiled to complement a 2-day training curriculum for drug treatment personnel.
Abstract
An introduction notes that personnel in both the domestic violence and drug treatment systems often lack accurate information about both problems and about appropriate interventions. The training curriculum includes an overview of domestic assault, an examination of the connection and disconnection between domestic violence and drug abuse, implications for intervention, and guidelines for responding in ways that promote victim safety, offender accountability, and recovery from addictions. The materials focus on the extent of domestic violence, discussions of the nature and dynamics of domestic violence, interventions with battered women who are involved with alcohol or other drugs, responses to the diversity of battered women, the relationship between alcohol and adult domestic violence, and interventions with batterers.
