This pocket-sized manual uses a situational format to provide police personnel with basic operational knowledge of the impact of constitutional law on police practices, based on United States Supreme Court decisions.
Abstract
The introduction notes that the manual is not a guide to police technique and is not intended to replace or modify detailed local and agency regulations developed to implement Supreme Court decisions on police practices. In addition, State or local courts may impose stricter standards under State constitutions than do the Federal courts. The first section covers police-citizen interactions, including police activities that require no evidence of wrongdoing and requirements related to investigative detention. Further sections focus on identifications, arrest, search incident to arrest, interrogation, search and seizure, surveillance, the preservation of evidence, entrapment, and interactions with disabled persons. List of case references and space for notes regarding local and departmental rules
