This report describes action taken in an English public housing community to tackle crime and related problems.
Abstract
The problems experienced by the Kingsmead Estate in Hackney were addressed by the Kingsmead Community Trust, comprising members of local agencies and organizations, Hackney Council officers and tenants. They secured police cooperation over action decided upon by the housing department and the police developed a sensitive community policing strategy for the Estate. The Trust provided activities for people, empowered them in their relationships with the supporting agencies and attracted funding from a wide range of statutory agencies, businesses and charitable organizations. The Estate experienced a reduction in crime and in the fear of crime, and an increase in business activity. The community developed a junior youth club and other activities for young people and a tenants association. Notes
