Abstract
The contributors have updated chapters on the themes covered in the first edition. These encompass the clinical implications of abuse; sociological perspectives; issues for social workers, nurses, clinicians, and general practitioners; the legal implications of abuse and neglect; and models for prevention of abuse. This edition also incorporates important new material. The implications of Great Britain's National Health Service and Community Care Act and the application of care management systems are evaluated, and the contributors offer suggestions for good practice in interagency cooperation. Addressing issues of social policy, family and kinship networks, gender, and the public response to the plight of vulnerable elderly people, the book looks at abuse and neglect in both domestic and residential settings and includes case examples of sexual, as well as physical, psychological, and material abuse. It outlines the use of existing assessment and screening tools and considers what can be learned from child protection procedures. Appendixes contain indicators of possible elder mistreatment, a high-risk placement worksheet, a caregiver strain questionnaire, an elder abuse assessment protocol for nurses, a caregiver abuse assessment protocol for nurses, and guidelines for staff in the Bury and Rochdale Partnership Group for Older People. 616 references and a subject index
