This collection of 22 papers reflects a variety of disciplines from both a theoretical and an applied approach. Many papers offer a feminist perspective that addresses the gendered nature of violence and the consequences of power inequality in American society. Topics covered in the papers are child abuse, incest, violence in heterosexual dating relationships, violence in gay and lesbian relationships, acquaintance rape, wife abuse and wife rape, and elder abuse. The papers take many forms, including the presentation of theoretical perspectives, popular debates, rates of incidence, and neglected areas of research. Some papers were included because they provide an overview of a specific type of violence. Others were included because they draw on the words of survivors to address the effects of violence among intimates. Each part of the anthology begins with a brief introduction to the problem. These introductions generally include information about the history of the problem, notable research on the subject, prevalence and incidence, and a discussion of the popular debates surrounding the subject matter. Discussion questions are provided at the end of each section of papers. The anthology concludes with a list of available resources on intimate violence. The list includes organizations that offer support to survivors of intimate violence and organizations that provide information, bibliographies, and statistical data.
