This journal issue describes various Weed and Seed programs and activities designed to reduce crime in and revitalize urban neighborhoods.
Abstract
The issue covers crime prevention efforts in Tucson, Arizona, where crime data indicate a 22-percent decline in homicides, a 27-percent decline in rapes, and a 37-percent decline in robberies between 1997 and 1998. In Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Weed and Seed efforts have targeted drug law enforcement and a cocaine distribution ring and crime control in a public housing development. Other articles in the issue deal with the following topics: (1) DEFY Train the Trainer program that aims to reduce the risks of adolescent drug abuse, school failure, delinquency, and violence; (2) a youth gang initiative grant received by the Maywood/Bellwood, Illinois, Weed and Seed site; (3) a program in Wheeling, West Virginia, to clean up the streets; (4) high school student involvement in the Civil Air Patrol in Austin, Illinois; and (5) television programming and conferences dealing with Weed and Seed programs and activities. 11 photographs
