Abstract
Panel members discussed, among other topics: (1) what to do when a student brings a weapon to school; (2) how to develop a school culture where the students themselves deal with infractions, such as carrying weapons or fighting, and help to develop violence prevention policies; (3) how schools should set standards and adhere to them consistently; (4) how to involve students and their parents in personal and community betterment efforts; (5) how to educate youngsters who have been expelled from their regular schools; (6) alternative schools; (7) transfers of children from juvenile to adult court; (8) alternatives to incarceration for juveniles; (9) monitoring and counseling; and (10) giving young people reasons to be optimistic about the future.
