The Correctional Program Assessment Inventory (CPAI) was used to determine how closely the drug treatment program of the Barrett Juvenile Correctional Center in Virginia reflected known principles of effective correctional treatment.
Abstract
The CPAI's six sections focused on: (1) program implementation and the program director, (2) client pre-service assessment, (3) program characteristics, (4) staff characteristics and practices, (5) prior evaluation and outcome studies, and (6) miscellaneous items such as ethical guidelines and levels of community support. Data were collected through structured interviews with selected staff on May 11-13, 1998; observation of several group activities; examination of representative case files and the program manual; and review of other program materials. Each component was rated as satisfactory or very satisfactory. Improvements were also recommended in each area. The Center received an overall score of 66 percent on the CPAI scale. This score is in the satisfactory range of the scale.
