Total New York State indictments for 1998 were less than 1 percent below the statewide level for 1997; this decrease occurred in New York City and surrounding suburban areas but was offset by a 3.5 percent increase in indictments in other upstate areas.
Abstract
Total New York State felony dispositions for 1998 declined by 3.1 percent compared to 1997. This decline occurred in New York City only, with suburban dispositions up less than 1 percent and other upstate dispositions up 4.1 percent. The total number of felony cases awaiting disposition declined by 1.2 percent in 1998 compared to 1997. The decrease in pending dispositions occurred in New York City and surrounding suburban areas, while pending dispositions of other upstate areas rose by 1 percent. The number of felony dispositions pending for 6 months or more increased by 2.4 percent from 6,141 in 1997 to 6,288 in 1998. This rise occurred in New York City, while pending dispositions in suburban and upstate areas declined. The number of offenders convicted but still awaiting sentence increased by 7.2 percent in 1998 compared to 1997. This increase occurred in New York City, while other combined areas of the State declined by 3.8 percent. 14 tables and 7 figures
