The volume covers a period of 27 years, during which time psychological treatments in criminal justice settings have evolved substantially. Three working assumptions were prominent during those years: effective psychotherapy cured criminals; indeterminate sentences were desirable because they allowed treatment until readiness for release; and psychodynamically based therapies were the treatment of choice, which gave way to problem-focused, eclectic and cognitive-behavioral therapies as typical treatments of choice. The book demonstrates ways in which the three assumptions have been discarded in part and reshaped since 1971.
