The ISP reviewed available evidence management systems and decided to create its own system using software written in-house and equipment from Intermec Technologies Corporation. The software is called the Evidence Management System. The ISP has 27 evidence vaults throughout the State and wanted to maintain the information centrally. District vaults are now electronically tied to a central database. A simple computer query brings up the information instantly. A bar code label on the evidence and the shelf it occupies is central to the system's efficiency. Scanning the bar code label automatically updates the evidence location and status. An automatic receipt function has reduced pickup errors. The system also generates exception reports that list missing items. The automated system also reports to the evidence custodian when a piece of evidence has reached disposal age, prompting a follow-up query to the agent in charge of the case.
