Part I contains two chapters that constitute an introduction to industrial security. One chapter traces the evolution of the private security industry from its early years to the development of contract security services. The second introductory chapter provides an outline for the development of a proprietary security program, using a hypothetical company as an example. Part II contains five chapters on the theme of "organizing for security." The topics discussed are security organization and staffing, duties and responsibilities, security uses of photography, the security office and facilities, and the security agency's relationship with other entities both inside and outside the organization being served. Part III contains seven chapters on "internal controls." The chapters address access control, personnel clearance, document control, fire prevention and control, emergency and disaster planning, theft and pilferage controls, and retail security. Three chapters compose Part IV, which concerns "external threats and special problems." Chapter subjects are perimeter and exterior protection, executive protection and terrorism, and specific crime problems. Topics in Part V, "electronic aids in security," encompass closed-circuit television, communications systems, alarms, and automatic access control. The concluding four chapters focus on "security and society," with attention to security authority, new directions in security, the prevention of workplace violence, and private security and high-tech crimes.
