Legal and economic reforms are gradually improving conditions and opening opportunities for women in China. However, much still needs to be done to achieve the emancipation of women and equality between men and women, especially in remote mountainous areas that have experienced little economic and cultural modernization. Women in these areas continue to experience sex discrimination and infringements on their legal rights. The Qianxi County Women's Federation has worked actively for nearly 10 years to change backward ideology and traditional practices that have denied women equality and to provide the organization and guidance necessary for women to have active roles in social and economic development. The Federation actively publicizes and promotes the implementation of the 1992 Law of the People's Republic of China on the Protection of the Rights and Interests of Women. It has addressed the audiences' varying levels of education and acceptance, carried out systematic training programs, and used varied methods to generate interest in the law. The three problems that impede equality of the sexes are: (1) women's low levels of education, acceptance of change, and self-reliance; (2) insufficient protection of women's rights and interests; and (3) geographical and travel restrictions in this rural area. The Federation plans three types of actions so that women in rural areas will emerge from their subordinate positions and receive positive acknowledgment from society. Notes and 1 reference
