This article reviews use of the Internet for law enforcement education and training.
Abstract
Although educational television systems and academic organizations use the Internet for educational purposes, distance education is not a standard practice within law enforcement agencies. However, there are some new technologies available to law enforcement, with more to come in the near future. The Law Enforcement Training Network is a for-profit training organization that offers courses delivered by an encrypted satellite signal to subscribing law enforcement agencies. The Federal Law Enforcement Training Center is starting its distance training component. The National Cybercrime Training Partnership has begun a "train-the-trainer" program to expand the pool of individuals who are familiar with current technological developments and to augment the ranks of persons qualified to teach computer investigative and forensic procedures and techniques. The article includes a list of strategic issues for developing distance training programs and names and websites of organizations to consult for further information.
