This training program implements an interdisciplinary approach to training professionals who work with or on behalf of children.
Abstract
The 15-hour program is a collaborative effort among social service professionals in the domestic abuse/violence, child abuse/neglect and substance abuse fields. Training focuses on children as parts of a holistic family system and integrates knowledge and skills from each of the social service areas. The program places special emphasis on promoting participants' understanding and awareness of the effects of these issues on children and their families. It seeks to promote collaboration among social service providers at both state and community levels and to form a basis for future community-based interdisciplinary teamwork. It includes five individual sessions: The Family; Domestic Violence and Substance Abuse; Child Abuse/Neglect, Reporting Requirements, Family System, and Similarities; Differences Among the Three Abuses; and Abuse Affected Behaviors, Feelings, and Perceptions. The program includes opportunities for discussion, problem solving, role-playing, case studies and other small group exercises to facilitate analysis and application of relevant knowledge and skills, especially in the context of participants' needs and experience.
