Although some persons will see the book as a propagandistic derogation of the black community and some will feel that it proves the inherent prejudice of American culture, the book does not serve any cause or advance any point of view. It is intended to be a reportorial resource, providing access to Federal Government information. The main portion of the book is divided into eight chapters of tables: (1) Demographics & Characteristics of the Population; (2) Vital Statistics & Health; (3) Education; (4) Government, Elections & Public Opinion; (5) Crime, Law Enforcement, & Corrections; (6) The Labor Force, Employment & Unemployment; (7) Earnings, Income, Poverty, & Wealth; and (8) Special Topics. The material was arranged in a sequence roughly following the pattern found in publications of the U.S. Bureau of the Census, which was the source of most of the data in the book.
