This book presents information on the histories, current situations, and emerging issues of the adult probation systems of nine countries in the Asia-Pacific region: the Philippines, Japan, the Republic of Korea, China, India, Fiji, Pakistan, Indonesia, and Thailand.
Abstract
A representative from each of these countries provides information on the adult probation system in his/her country in accordance with a predetermined format for the information. Following a review of the historical background of the probation system, a review of the probation services is provided. This discussion encompasses such issues as the purpose of probation, client characteristics, probation officer duties, and the supervision of offenders. Information is then provided on the structure of probation services. Information in this section addresses organization, personnel, and training programs. Information on probationary supervision procedures includes the probation order, a postsentence investigation, the probation period, and probation conditions. A section on the probation supervision process deals with such topics as probation philosophy, the treatment process, case management, levels of supervision, and the involvement of volunteers. Any probation evaluation findings are summarized, and the future of probation in the country is discussed. Tables and charts are provided.
