The author addresses criminal justice orientation as a professional response to child maltreatment and compares it to more liberal social work ideologies. In addition, the author focuses on the proverbial punishment-treatment dichotomy, the role of criminal justice agencies in child maltreatment, child maltreatment incidence studies and causal theories, and the extent of the child maltreatment problem.
