Abstract
Written for parents, teachers, and counselors, the book addresses the continuum of warning signs and what can be done to prevent violent outbursts by young people. The first part describes the extent of violence by young people in the community, in school, and at home and outlines various factors associated with aggressive acts. The second part presents a continuum of early, serious, and urgent warning signs--what they are and how they come about. In particular, the chapter on early warning signs discusses normal developmental processes in children that can go awry and that form the basis of many of the warning signs. The third part reviews the process of assessing the extent and nature of youth violence and offers guidelines to correct underlying problems that have led to warning signs. National associations concerned with preventing youth violence are listed in an appendix. References and tables
