The articles in this issue focus on increasing violence against women and girls, domestic violence, relational violence, random violence, and violence perpetrated by women and girls.
Abstract
The five articles presented derive from current "cutting-edge" research and project activity. The introductory article provides an overview of research that shows a connection between girls having been victims of violence and their own violent behavior. Other research reviewed in the introductory article pertains to the domestic abuse of women, including elderly women. The introductory article is followed by a more detailed account of research that documents the prevalence of the sexual and physical abuse of girls and its connection with the increasing manifestation of violent behavior by girls who have been violently victimized. Another article describes various projects throughout the country that are helping violent and abused girls to experience healing from their abuse and change their violent behavior. This is followed by an article that profiles various preventive measures underway to counter domestic violence. The remaining two articles outline the features of legislation designed to address violence against women and provide statistics on violence by family members and acquaintances against girls, elderly women, and disabled women; data are also provided on women in prison and violence committed by girls. For two of the articles, see NCJ-180872-73. A 29-item bibliography
