The risk perpetrators of domestic violence pose to victims and children after marital separation has led to the development of new laws and services designed to facilitate safe contact between perpetrators and their children.
Abstract
Specifically, many States have passed laws giving courts broad discretion to order supervised visitation in cases involving domestic violence. As supervised visitation becomes increasingly recognized as a potential tool for protecting battered women and their children, communities are mobilizing to develop supervised visitation services that are safe and appropriate for cases involving domestic violence. The risk perpetrators of domestic violence pose to their children-- specifically after marital separation--is examined, with emphasis on the unique challenges domestic violence presents in the context of parent-child visitation. The growing field of supervision programs that work with families experiencing domestic violence is addressed, as well as important issues domestic violence raises in program caseloads. Recommendations to facilitate supervised visitation in the context of domestic violence are offered in an appendix. 50 endnotes
