Prison construction projects completed during fiscal year 1998-1999 in the United States were surveyed, and the first part of survey findings are presented.
Abstract
The amount spent for the construction of new facilities and additions to existing ones totaled $2,058,980,109, excluding expenditures by the Federal Bureau of Prisons. One hundred eleven residential projects were completed at a cost of $1,759,721,362. Additionally, 18 support projects were completed at a cost of $118,049,480 and 14 combination residential/support projects were completed at a cost of $181,209,267. Types of projects included medical facilities, trustee camps, warehouse and office additions, fuel tank replacements, waste water and sewage lagoon upgrades, and security upgrades. New facility construction was reported by Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Idaho, Kansas, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, New Mexico, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, and the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Some projects continued into the 1999-2000 fiscal year. Trends in prison construction in Canada were similar to those in the United States. 1 table
