Drawing on two decades of experience as a clinician, trainer, and academic and organizational consultant, the author presents a women's substance abuse recovery program based on theories of addiction, women's psychological development, and trauma.
Abstract
The program manual has two components: a facilitator's guide and a woman's journal. The facilitator's guide outlines a step-by-step approach for group facilitators who lead participants through the 17-session program. The woman's journal complements the facilitator's guide and is used by each participant as a workbook for her journey through the program and as a diary of her progress. The program is designed to provide gender-specific treatment for women who abuse alcohol and other drugs, to integrate substance abuse treatment with trauma recovery issues, to guide help addicted women recover, and to reduce recidivism. The program is organized into four modules: self, relationships, sexuality, and spirituality. Specific topics covered within the four modules include self-esteem, sexism, family of origin, interpersonal violence, sexuality and abuse, and meditation and relaxation. 100 references
