Findings from a survey of burglary revictimization in Tallahassee, Florida, showed that a very small proportion of people and places suffered from a disproportionate amount of victimization.
Abstract
In order to determine the time period of heightened risk for burglary revictimization of residences in Tallahassee, computer-generated crime data were obtained from the Tallahassee Police Department's Crime Analysis Unit. Of 2,980 separate residential addresses in one police zone characterized by relatively high rates of reported crime, including burglary, 848 burglaries were reported to the police between 1992 and 1994. Survey findings showed that only 1.2 percent of all residents in the jurisdiction suffered from 29 percent of all burglaries reported to the police. Further, 25 percent of burglary revictimizations occurred within a week of the initial offense, while 51 percent occurred within a month. Findings are discussed in the context of preventing burglary revictimization. 49 references and 2 figures
