The report identifies gaps in research and data and outlines the next steps required to further the twin goals of obtaining a national perspective on violence against women and improving the legal response to violence against women. Priority topics for research fall into three categories: violence against women, domestic violence, and sexual assault. Violence against women includes women’s fear of violence and the risk of violence and abuse in relationships other than those of an intimate nature (for example, a fiduciary relationship). Domestic violence includes the impact of legislative changes, breaches of protection orders, perpetrator programs and the effects on children of witnessing domestic violence. The category of sexual assault covers community attitudes, evaluation of support services, attitudes and experiences of key justice personnel, programs for sex offenders and prosecution and sentencing. With respect to the coordination of data, a pressing priority is for the creation of a national database on protection orders. Abbreviations, notes, tables, figures, appendixes
