This report shows how corporations, communities, and law enforcement agencies have constructed and maintained partnerships to help build safer, healthier communities.
Abstract
The first chapter describes the characteristics of a public safety partnership. Such partnerships connect businesses, law enforcement agencies, civic leaders, and community groups to draw upon the unique capabilities and resources of each to build safer, more sustainable communities. There is no one model or definition of a successful public safety partnership. Partnerships are as unique as the communities in which they are based, and their objectives, activities, and organizational structures will vary widely; however, successful partnerships share several critical features. Nine features of successful public safety partnerships are profiled in the first chapter. The second chapter guides readers in determining whether or not a public safety partnership would be beneficial for a particular business or community. Business and community benefits of such a partnership are outlined. Chapter three provides a step-by-step approach for developing and sustaining an effective public safety partnership. The steps are to build stakeholders' commitment by defining a common mission, plan a strategy, implement the strategy, and measure success. The report concludes by noting that companies which have committed their expertise, resources, vision, and leadership to public safety partnerships indicate that their employees feel safer on the job and traveling to and from work; they have been better able to attract and maintain a high-quality work force; and their image and relationships within the community have been strengthened. 8 notes and a listing of 43 resources
