This report on the eighth session of the United Nations Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice includes recommendations to the Economic and Social Council for the adoption of four draft resolutions by the General Assembly, as well as six draft resolutions and three draft decisions for adoption by the Economic and Social Council.
Abstract
Draft resolutions to be recommended by the Economic and Social Council for adoption by the United Nations General Assembly pertain to the Tenth United Nations Congress on the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders, the Draft United Nations Convention Against Transnational Organized Crime and the draft protocols thereto, the activities of the Ad Hoc Committee on the Elaboration of a Convention Against Transnational Organized Crime, and action against corruption. Draft resolutions for adoption by the Economic and Social Council pertain to the work of the United Nations Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice Program, action to promote cooperation and the functioning of the clearing house on international projects in the field of crime prevention and criminal justice, effective crime prevention, the development and implementation of mediation and restorative justice measures in criminal justice, penal reform, and the administration of juvenile justice. Draft decisions for adoption by the Economic and Social Council involve a preliminary draft of the Vienna Declaration on Crime and Justice, the report of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice on its eighth session and provisional agenda and documentation for the ninth session of the Commission, and appointment of members of the Board of Trustees of the United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute. The structure of the debate, deliberations, and action taken by the Commission are reported for the following issues: work of the Centre for International Crime Prevention, strategies for crime prevention, Tenth UN Congress on the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders, international cooperation in combatting transnational crime, the use and application of UN standards and norms in crime prevention and criminal justice, and strategic management and program questions. Also included are the provisional agenda for the ninth session of the Commission, adoption of the report of the Commission on its eighth session, and organization of the session. Appended supplementary information
