This audio CD presents 22 brief stories and comments by juvenile justice personnel from throughout the country regarding youth they have influenced and who have influenced them.
Abstract
The contributors include juvenile judges, juvenile probation officers, child protection workers, and police who have dealt with juveniles. Stories recounted involve abused and neglected children and youth who have committed delinquent acts. Many of the stories involve contacts that juvenile justice workers have had with successful young adults who as troubled juveniles were helped by the actions and decisions of the workers. A theme that emerges from many of the stories is that what is done in the juvenile justice system and by individual workers can determine the future of a youth. Many of the juveniles in the stories remember how they were treated by the individual juvenile justice workers even though the workers were unaware at the time of the impact they were having on the youth. The stories of abused and neglected youth emphasize the importance of protecting youth from abusive parents and finding them permanent placements in families where they are safe and positively nurtured. Suggestions for using this CD include for inspiring and motivating juvenile justice workers, public service segments on radio, in speeches, for schools, for service groups, for newspaper editors, in community agencies, and for in-service training.
