This workbook provides guidelines for planning and conducting on-the-job training for corrections staff through the "Four-Step Training Method," a proven system, as well as several tools to assist the organization and the trainer.
Abstract
Following discussions of the importance of on-the-job training and a description of the development of a training plan, the Four-Step Training Method is presented. It involves "Preparation" (prepare yourself, prepare the training materials, prepare the training environment, and prepare trainees); "Presentation/Demonstration" (present the training content, demonstrate the task, and verify that trainees understand the tasks); "Tryout" (implement trainees' practice, observe trainees' practice, provide feedback to the trainees, and help trainees gain speed and develop accuracy); and "Followup" (have trainees work alone, designate helpers for trainees, reconfirm that trainees understand tasks, and evaluate training procedures). The two remaining chapters discuss how to handle difficult training situations and describe tools for implementing on-the-job training and evaluation. Chapter objectives, summaries, and reviews are included.
