Abstract
Weed and Seed Best Practices demonstrates the power and benefit of effective collaboration and the dynamic relationships between diverse systems and individuals living in communities. Success in the four integral elements of the Weed and Seed Strategy--law enforcement; community policing; prevention/intervention/treatment; and neighborhood restoration--is discussed. Additional information is presented on the the ways sites have learned from each other as they have implemented their Weed and Seed Strategy. Programs in Baltimore, Indianapolis and Los Angeles are discussed. In the historic East Baltimore Community Action Coalition, a sound operating structure and the equitable division of responsibility by the Steering Committee guarantees this site's long-term sustainability. Clear goals and strong relationships between residents and law enforcement have allowed the High Point Community Against Violence Initiative to develop a powerful community policing focus. The Los Angeles Weed and Seed's Safe Haven established a collaboration among probation, educators, youth, and parents creating a beneficial truancy prevention program. The presence of a variety of strong leaders willing to share resources has set the course for significant change.
