The first steps in the car-cuffing technique are to assess the situation carefully while approaching the car, to instruct the driver to keep the hands in plain view, and to direct the driver to drop the keys outside the car. The next steps are to instruct the driver to keep the right hand in sight and to keep the left hand spread outside the window with the thumb pointing down, to grasp the wrist, and to handcuff the wrist. The final steps are to tell the driver to put the right hand behind the back while turning to the right, to reach into the vehicle and handcuff the right wrist, to extract the driver from the car, and to pat down the driver.
