Abstract
To foster safety in schools, the entire community must get involved. Some of the most promising prevention and intervention strategies involve administrators, teachers, families, students, law enforcement officers, juvenile justice practitioners, and community members, working together to establish a crisis response plan as well as a long-term strategy to form positive relationships with all children and families. Children give warning signs when there may be serious problems, and these underlying problems must be addressed early so children get the help they need before it is too late. To support collaborative strategies, the departments of Education, Justice and Health and Human Services developed the Safe Schools/Healthy Students initiative. The project is providing school districts with resources to implement or enhance comprehensive, communitywide strategies to create safe, drug-free schools and promote healthy childhood development.
