This report surveyed 1,000 Americans age 12 to 17, 822 middle and high school principals and 823 middle school and high school teachers on their 1995-1998 attitudes regarding substance abuse. It presents tabular and narrative statistics concerning, among other topics: (1) Most important problem facing teens (drugs, social pressures or crime and violence); (2) Teen substance use; (3) Differences between 12-year-olds’ and 13-year-olds’ world with regard to drug use, drug availability and reporting others who use or sell drugs; (4) Fear of getting caught using drugs; (5) Belief in effectiveness of anti-drug education; (6) Belief that school drug problem is getting worse; (7) Belief that teens can use marijuana every weekend and still do well in school; (8) Anti-drug education; (9) Belief that school anti-drug measures are effective; (10) Smoking/drinking/illegal drug connection; (11) Influences on decision to use or not use drugs; and (12) Protective factors.
