This report presents statistics the caseloads of the Maryland courts during fiscal year 1999, as well as data on the operation and functions and an overview of both individual courts and the entire Maryland judicial system.
Abstract
The judicial branch experienced approximately $261.8 million in State and local costs. The judicial branch had 269 judicial positions and approximately 3,800 non-judicial positions as of June 30, 1999. The judicial system consisted of the Court of appeals, the Court of Special Appeals, the circuit courts, the District Court, and the orphans’ court. The circuit courts noted a 3.7 percent increase in filing activity, from 277,204 case filings during fiscal year 1998 to 287,445 case filings during fiscal year 1999. More than 58 percent of the cases filed in the circuit courts during fiscal year 1999 involved civil matters. District court filings during fiscal year 1999 included 1,187,130 motor vehicle cases, 213,343 criminal cases, and 807,296 civil cases. The district courts have experienced a 6 percent increase in total filings over the past 5 years.
