This manual details the central elements and relationships among drug abuse, disability, and vocational rehabilitation aims to provide background information and practical guidance for achieving positive outcomes for persons who have a drug abuse disability or a co-existing disability.
Abstract
The guidelines aim to assist providers in enhancing or improving individualized treatment methodologies tailored to the individual’s biological, psychological, and social needs and in devising alternatives to provide full access to treatment services without physical, attitudinal, or communications barriers. They also aim to help providers establish initiatives that promote gainful employment opportunities for individuals living with co-occurring physical disability and drug abuse disorders. Individual sections present a holistic approach to the disability of drug abuse, with emphasis on drug abuse as it co-exists with other disabilities and the important role of vocational rehabilitation in the recovery process. Additional sections focus on the empowerment of the person with a drug abuse disability, psycho/social/spiritual development and vocational planning, career planning and the person with a drug abuse disability, and job development and job placement approaches for the person with a drug abuse disability. Other sections focus on follow-up counseling and relapse in the context of vocational rehabilitation, drug abuse issues in community-based rehabilitation programs, and individual cases that demonstrate the vocational rehabilitation process for the person in recovery.
