The 14-story St. Louis County Justice Center provides a case study for considering technology choices in security control systems.
Abstract
The 503,000-square-foot direct supervision facility, completed in 1997, has 1,232 beds and is equipped with a variety of technology-based security controls. The primary technology areas include touch-screen computer stations and wireless control. Touch-screen stations are on dual computer networks that allow high-speed operations and workload sharing. Inmate control and communication are facilitated by wireless control technology. Design considerations in implementing technology-based security controls are discussed, with emphasis on system reliability and system maintenance. Important steps for other jurisdictions to follow in the adoption of security control systems for correctional facilities are listed. 3 photographs
